Write a thoughtful comment to the prompt below (worth 1 point). If you thoughtfully reply to a fellow classmate's comment, you'll receive an additional 1/2 point.

Put yourself in the shoes of an American citizen during the 1950s McCarthy era. What do you think your daily life would have been like? What would you have felt going about your day? How would you have felt going to bed at night and waking up the next day?

  1. I would have been pretty paranoid about having my opinions being used to show that I was related with communism. I would definitely watch what I would say.

    1. I would have to agree with Dan the Man, it would obviously be different from the way I live now, but I should think twice about what I would say.

  2. I would have felt scared. Not only scared from the spread of communism but scared of the chance that I might be accused of being a communist with no evedince. I would also feel that I was losing some of my freedom and rights. Everday wouldnt be able to say what I was feeling and thinking for the chance that I could be in trouble. The Mcarthy era was definitly a scary era to live in.

  3. I would have felt like i was in one of today third world countries. Freedom of speech and the press is guaranteed in the constitution. Being unable to freely talk about your opinions would be horrible. I would feel as if every second of my life was being watched or almost recorded. I agree it is one thing to speak out disrespectfully against the government and its views, but talking to your friends and family should be another. Each night i would regret the patriotism i have in the US and feel as if I'm adding to the corruption just living there. _Nicholas Caputo

  4. As shown in the movie, many people were worried about what they say and how the United States would be in the future. I would have felt afraid and threatened. Not being able to say what you want could have led to slightest accusation of being communist. I think that not only would my daily life change but I would have more worries. The constant thinking about being accused, or feeling like someone is overhearing me would linger in my head. In this time in history, I think it made it very difficult for people to speak out and they felt they too had to censor themselves. Each day would be a day to worry and not knowing what may come your way.

  5. If I were an American citizen in the McCarthy era, my daily life would be completely different from how I would like to have lived in that era. Since Senator McCarthy was extremely harsh and nosy about everyones involvement and whether they were communistic or not, I would feel extremely nervous and threatened. Under McCarthy's harsh rulings, I would stay away from any organization that could possibly put me under the assumption of being communistic. I would continuously fall asleep at night worrying for my life and if I was going to be the next one in court or even serving the death sentence.

  6. If i were living in the McCarthy era, I feel that I wouldn't be able to live a normal life because I would be worried about doing something that could be remotely bad and end up going to prison for something absurd. I would have been very intimidated by McCarthy and all of his rules that he had and such. I don't think I would be able to share what I wanted to say at all times because if I said the wrong words then I could be accused of something I didn't do. I wouldn't feel safe at all living in this era and it would be very difficult for many reasons.
